CBD: Cannabidiol

From Farm to Pharmacy

Williamsburg Drug Company has partnered with Ananda Professional to bring our patients and customers the first fully compliant and legal CBD oil product line. Currently, Anandas’ products are sold directly to independent pharmacies as it features pharmaceutical-grade full-spectrum cannabinoids and meets strict safety standards and guidelines. The staff at Williamsburg Drug Company have all been trained by Ananda Professional to offer up-to-date educational information to those interested in using CBD.

The most commonly asked question is: Will I get high from hemp? The answer is “no.” Here’s why.

While there are at least 113 known cannabinoids produced by the hemp plant, cannabis is identified by its two active ingredients: THC and CBD. THC is the only molecule in the cannabis family with a psychoactive component. It’s the only one that will get you “high.” CBD, even at extremely high doses, will not make you feel “high.”

There are hundreds of other cannabinoids, terpenes and phytonutrients present in the cannabis plant that are beneficial to overall health and wellness. Unfortunately, they are improperly associated with the properties of one molecule, THC.

Section 7606 of the Farm Bill defines industrial hemp as cannabis plants with <0.3% THC. Our products contain a full spectrum of cannabinoids, including THC and CBD. To maintain compliance with all laws, our products are rigorously tested to ensure a level of <0.3% THC.

CBD Use and Children

Every product sold is third-party tested by ISO-certified labs to ensure quality and safety, with results available via our COA Lookup Tool. We meticulously test for microbial safety, residual solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals, while offering one of the most robust and transparent traceability platforms in the entire hemp and CBD industry.

Because the potential effects of CBD oil vary greatly, being able to say definitively whether CBD oil is safe for children is difficult. However, research has indicated that children may safely take daily doses of up to 20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Adverse side effects of CBD are uncommon, even in high doses, with sleepiness being the most common. Several studies have implicated CBD in the effective treatment of child epilepsy, behavioral conditions, and perinatal brain injury in children. In fact, the only CBD treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration treats two rare forms of childhood epilepsy.

The role of CBD for autism. Some children with autism find that using CBD oil for anxiety alleviates not only stress but also aggression, self-injurious behaviors, and trouble with social interactions. CBD oil can also help children with co-occurring seizures. Of course, each child’s experience is unique, but in states where medical marijuana is illegal, parents are reporting positive CBD oil benefits for autism and epilepsy. Because cannabidiol cbd is not psychoactive, it is the option most parents prefer for their children over medical marijuana.

Many children with epilepsy find the same (or better) relief from their symptoms as they do with traditional anti-anxiety and anticonvulsant medications with the added bonus of fewer side effects. Researchers are still working to identify how CBD oil can help anxiety in autism, but for many families, the anecdotal evidence is enough for now.

CBD Topicals

Topical cannabis and hemp have been used for millennia, with records of use dating back to ancient Egypt. According to Dr. Tamas Biro, director of immunology at the University of Debrecen in Hungary, states that “the main physiological function of the skin’s endocannabinoid system is to constitutively control the proper and well-balanced proliferation, differentiation and survival – as well as immune competence and tolerance – of skin cells.

Many of us learn as children that epidermis is a fancy word for skin – the largest organ in the body. The skin is an all-important and multifunctional workhorse, protecting us from the environment, sensing light, moisture, pain (and pleasure), playing a crucial role in immunity, hormone function, Vitamin D synthesis, and much more.

What may come as a surprise to many is that our skin is rich in CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptors – which is why CBD topicals can be such a saving grace. CB1 and CB2 receptors are both present in virtually every type of skin cell. The omnipresence of cannabinoid receptors in the skin hints at the importance of maintaining good ‘cannabinoid tone’ – or the balance of cannabinoid levels in the skin. While several types of skin cells secrete endocannabinoids (such as anandamide and 2-AG) on an as-needed basis, they are susceptible to the same problems that affect the rest of the mind and body – the issues at the root of Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome.

The three types of cell function (proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis) are all moderated by cannabinoids. The maintenance of these crucial cellular functions is what enables life-long skin regeneration and wound healing.

CBD Salve vs Roll-On

What we love about CBD topicals is how convenient they are – apply a little to the area needing some extra love, massage it in, and that’s that! Generally, less is more – you’ll only need a minimal amount, and then a few minutes to let it soak in. With some trial and error, it’s relatively easy to dial in your ideal CBD dosage.

The CBD Salve is oriented for all-over total body support (except for the face) to relieve sores, itchiness, and other bothersome skin conditions. A salve is loosely defined as any ointment used to promote healing of the skin or as protection. The salve offers additional aromatherapeutic benefits thanks to the presence of high-quality essential oils, as well.

The CBD Roll-On is geared more for focused, on-demand relief of aches and physical discomfort – and also has a super convenient applicator.

OILS

A HOME-GROWN APPROACH

At Ananda Professional, we take a homegrown approach to farming with our clean, growing process. We start out with a patent-protected full-spectrum seed which allows our farmers to cultivate a robust, sustainable crop. Our team stands in the field side by side with our farmers so that we are integrated into every part of the cultivation process. 100% of our product is grown outdoors in Kentucky soil and processed in the State of Kentucky. We use a highly effective ethanol extraction technique that allows us to pull an array of cannabinoids and hundreds of bioactive phytonutrients from the hemp – resulting in a formula that is truly deserving of the title ‘full spectrum.’

CBD oil poses many health benefits and is the preferred method recommended by our pharmacists. Cannabinoids, terpenes and other chemical compounds found in cannabis achieve limited success when working in isolation or as individual components. Research suggests that when these individual components of the cannabis plant support one another, therapeutic benefits are magnified. Together, they produce an effect that is greater than the sum of their parts. This phenomenon is known as the “entourage effect.” The entourage effect supports the idea that whole plant medicine is superior to pure extracts.

When CBD oil is taken correctly, sublingually, it is absorbed directly in to your blood stream without bypassing through the esophagus and liver. This method of delivery enhances the “entourage effect” and overall efficacy of the CBD oil used.

These tinctures are available in strengths of 300mg, 600mg, and 2000mg – as well as the 600mg Zero THC formula (full spectrum CBD without the THC = broad spectrum CBD). You can take our tincture any time of day, although we do recommend dosing in the evening when you are first starting.

All of Ananda Hemp’s tinctures, regardless of potency, come in amber glass bottles and contain a dropper applicator with measurement markers (.25, .50, .75, and 1mL), allowing for precision and flexibility when taking your CBD.

THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is made up of a collection of cell receptors and corresponding molecules. You can think of cell receptors like little locks on the surface of your cells. The keys to these locks are called endocannabinoids.

Endocannabinoids are the chemical messengers that tell your body when to get processes moving and when to stop. Each time an endocannabinoid binds to a cell, it relays a message, giving your cell specific direction.

Certain receptors are more concentrated in specific regions. CB1 receptors are abundant in the central nervous system. CB2 receptors are more often found on immune cells, in the gastrointestinal tract and in the peripheral nervous system. The diversity of receptor locations shows just how important endocannabinoids are for day-to-day bodily function.

The ECS helps to maintain optimal balance in the body – known as homeostasis. It also helps regulate sleep, appetite, digestion, hunger, mood, motor control, immune function, reproduction and fertility, pleasure and reward, pain, memory and temperature regulation.

When the ECS is disrupted, any one of these things can fall out of balance. When the body does not produce enough endocannabinoids or cannot regulate them properly, you are more susceptible to illnesses that affect one or several of the functions mentioned above.

The endocannabinoid system is extremely complex and plays important roles in many vital processes, and it holds promise as a treatment target for many debilitating conditions.
