What Is Compounding and How Can It Help?

Compounded medications are used for a variety of reasons, such as:

Discontinued or Unavailable Medications

When medications are discontinued or generally unavailable from pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers, compounding provides an alternative solution for patients in need.

Allergen-Free Formulations

When a patient is allergic to certain preservatives, dyes, or binders found in commercially available drugs, compounding can create a safe alternative without those ingredients.

Customized Dosage Strengths

When treatment requires tailored dosage strengths for patients with unique needs—such as infants, elderly patients, or animals—compounding offers precise adjustments.

Medication Combination for Convenience

When a pharmacist can combine multiple medications into a single dose, it increases patient compliance and simplifies treatment.

Alternative Dosage Forms

When a patient cannot swallow pills or capsules, a pharmacist can prepare the medication in an alternative form such as a cream, liquid, or dissolvable troche for easier administration.

Flavoring for Better Taste

When medications require flavor additives to improve palatability, compounding can enhance taste, especially for children and pets who may refuse to take their medicine.

GLP-1 Medications

Important Update on GLP-1 Availability

We know there’s a lot of discussion around GLP-1 medications, and due to recent changes from the FDA, we want to keep you informed about the future availability of compounded GLP-1s at our pharmacy.

As of March 18, 2025, the FDA has officially removed these medications from its drug shortage list. This means that pharmacies, like ours, will soon be required to stop purchasing and compounding NEW batches. However, we can continue to dispense from our current inventory. We are actively exploring alternative sources or treatment options and will keep you informed every step of the way. Your care is our top priority, and we will do everything we can to ensure a smooth transition. If you have any questions or need to discuss your options, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ll update you as things evolve.

GLP-1s have gained attention not only for their role in weight loss and diabetes management, but also for a variety of other potential health benefits. Let’s dive into the game-changing benefits of GLP-1s—

Reduced Inflammation

GLP-1s help lower chronic inflammation, which is linked to conditions like COPD and liver cancer, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders.

Brain Health

These medications may improve cognitive function and reduce brain fog. Early studies also suggest potential neuro-protective effects that could help in conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

Cardiovascular Benefits

GLP-1s are known to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and improve overall heart health, making them valuable for people with cardiovascular risk factors.

Improved Gut Health

Some studies suggest GLP-1s may promote gut repair and alleviate gastrointestinal issues like gastritis.

Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

GLP-1s show promise in reducing liver fat and improving markers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Hormonal Balance

By influencing insulin and glucagon secretion, GLP-1s help improve metabolic hormone regulation.

Reduction in Cravings

Beyond aiding in weight loss, GLP-1s may reduce cravings for unhealthy foods and even alcohol, improving overall lifestyle habits.

Metabolic Health

Goodbye to blood sugar spikes and hello to smoother, more balanced levels!

Potential Anti-Aging Effects

By targeting inflammation and improving metabolism, GLP-1s could play a role in slowing some age-related processes.

FAQs About Our Compounding Services

Yes, compounded medications require a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

Coverage varies—some insurance plans reimburse for compounded medications, while others do not. Patients may pay out of pocket, but can also use HSA/FSA funds.

Yes, compounded medications are typically HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) eligible as long as they are prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider and are medically necessary. However, it’s always a good idea for patients to check with their HSA/FSA provider to confirm coverage, as some plans may have specific requirements or exclusions.

Absolutely! Compounded medications, especially for children and pets, can be flavored to make them easier to take.

Yes! Veterinary compounding helps customize medications for pets with unique dosing or formulation needs. We proudly serve pet owners across Williamsburg, Yorktown, Newport News, and the surrounding areas.

Animal patients make up almost 40% of our compounded medications!

It depends on the complexity, but most compounded prescriptions take 24-72 hours to prepare.

No, compounded medications are not less effective when prepared correctly by a licensed compounding pharmacy.

In fact, they can be more effective for some patients because they are customized to their specific needs. Since compounding allows for personalized dosing, alternative delivery forms (such as creams, liquids, or troches), and the removal of allergens or unnecessary additives, it can improve medication tolerance and adherence, leading to better therapeutic outcomes.

However, because compounded medications are made in small batches rather than mass-produced, they do not go through the same large-scale FDA approval process as commercial drugs. This makes it important for patients to choose a reputable pharmacy like Williamsburg Drug Company that follows strict compounding standards with PCAB accreditation.

Compounding is allowed for medications that are:

Prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider for an individual patient.
Not commercially available in the required form, strength, or combination.
Safe and stable when compounded (some drugs degrade quickly or lose effectiveness).
Permitted by law – certain medications (especially controlled substances) may have additional restrictions.

Some drugs may have chemical properties that make them unsuitable for compounding.

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved because they are custom-made for individual patients and not mass-produced for commercial sale. However, the ingredients used in compounding are often FDA-approved, and our compounding pharmacy follows VERY strict USP (United States Pharmacopeia) guidelines to ensure quality, safety, and efficacy.

While the FDA does not regulate individual compounded medications, it does oversee outsourcing facilities that produce larger batches of compounded drugs under Section 503B of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Traditional compounding pharmacies operate under Section 503A, meaning they compound based on specific patient prescriptions and are regulated by state boards of pharmacy.

The shelf life of compounded medications varies depending on the drug, formulation, and storage conditions. Unlike mass-produced medications with long expiration dates, compounded drugs have beyond-use dates (BUDs) based on stability and safety guidelines.

Since compounded medications don’t undergo the same long-term stability testing as commercial drugs, pharmacists determine BUDs based on USP <795> (non-sterile) and USP <797> (sterile) guidelines. To ensure effectiveness and safety, always follow storage instructions (e.g., refrigeration if needed) and use the medication before its BUD.

My favorite pharmacy hands down! If you want a pharmacy that tailers your medicine to what you need quickly, well organized and making sure you understand each medication you take, this is the pharmacy for you. They even offer free delivery. Also if you're like me and take many medications, at different times of the day they off medicines in a box. It's all your oral medicine individually packaged on a kind of ticket roll delivery system that cuts all the opening different bottles right out of the equation! Also a free service that I never knew I always needed! Thank you Ken, Taylor, Debbie, Lisa and everyone else that's helped me over the many years I didn't mention. I'm forever grateful.

T.W. Taylor the owner and Pharmacist of the Williamsburg Drug Company has to be THE BEST Pharmacist that I have ever met! There were a few hiccups with my first order placed with them and he not only made it right, he drove almost an hour out of his way to hand deliver it himself and apologize. I was totally impressed and will definitely continue to have them fill my prescriptions. No one is perfect, it's how they handle the situation that makes it perfect.Thank you again T.W. for driving the distance.

The Pharmacists and staff are all so professional and helpful with all our prescription needs. Additionally, we appreciate their complete inventory of health care supplies we need from time to time as ordered by our primary care physician and chiropractor. It is always a pleasure walking into their two stores and be greeted by everyone.
